About Blue Light - Latest Links and Resources

Posted by Steve and Rhonda Mower on 20th Aug 2015

Reading Glasses Etc is a leader in providing blue block solutions and we like having informed customers. We provide here a couple of links to websites and blogs that deal with blue light. What blue light is, good vs. bad blue light, blue light related problems, and how to protect your eyes.

If you want to know about blue light you should go here first- BlueLightExposed.com. Started in 2014 by 3 optical companies, (sponsored by Essilor Canada, Nikon Optical Canada Inc, and Shamir Optical Industry LTD.) as a public awareness campaign, Blue Light Exposed offers visitors just about everything they could ever want to know about blue light and related issues. For example, did you know that?:

  • Wearing a lens treated with a blue-light filter coating helped reduce symptoms of eyestrain by half during prolonged computer exposure.
2.42 symptoms before versus 1.47 symptoms with blue coating (p=0.04).
  • After wearing a lens treated with a blue-light filter coating, subjects with symptoms of eyestrain due to prolonged computer exposure felt a significant improvement of the following symptoms: dry eyes, sticky eyes, and the feeling of grittiness or "sand" in the eye.
  • They also reported trends of the overall vision and improved visual performances in situations of low contrast.

There is a lot of information here including this video-

A mild caveat -Blue Light Exposed.com is a great source and IMHO, a beautiful website as well. With that said, it is a site developed by optical companies and they of course, have much to gain by providing and/or promoting this info, but I am satisfied that they are not directly selling any branded products on this site and also provide great resources to back up their data.

Another resource I would like to share is Uroš on his site, glarminy.com. There is a lot of info pertaining to blue light and insomnia with easy to read charts and graphs. Caveat- Uroš gets income from linked products but is very upfront about what he does or does not profit from. I like that and I can tell that he put a lot of work into this article.

We hope that you find these sources relevant and interesting. Best to all!
